'Sleeping beauty' dies after weeks in coma

The model-cum-presenter - who went into coma after receiving a cosmetic filler injection in her buttocks a few weeks ago - died yesterday.

Police will now file charges against unlicensed clinician Thanat “Dr Pop” Natveerakul for allegedly causing death through recklessness.

Thanat allegedly injected a chemical into the buttocks of Athitiya “Kratae” Eiamyai, 33, on September 16. She allegedly lost consciousness soon after the injection and later lapsed into coma. A few days later, Thanat turned himself in and confessed that he did not have the licence to perform the procedure.

Dr Suwinai Budsarakhamwong, director of Kluaynamthai 1 Hospital director, said respiratory aid was removed after Athitiya was declared dead at 10.40am yesterday. She was being treated for brain inflammation at the hospital since September 18.

Suwinai said the patient’s blood pressure and vital signs had started dropping since 9am yesterday and x-rays showed that her bran was swelling further. Doctors said her death stemmed from brain damage due to swelling from the lack of oxygen or the death of brain cells resulting in the organ’s failure.

Her body will be handed over to Chulalongkorn Hospital’s Forensic Division for autopsy. The doctor also warned women to only use cosmetic services from credible and authorised practitioners.

City police deputy chief Anuchai Lekbamrung said Thanat would be summoned to face the additional charge of causing death out of recklessness, which is punishable by 10 years in jail and/or Bt20,000 in fine. He was initially charged with causing serious injury through recklessness, which is punishable by three years in jail and Bt6,000 in fine.
