Education forum in Phuket

At a three-day meeting in Phuket, education officials discussed international studies in an attempt to discover students' abilities, performance and problems.

The 53rd IEA General Assembly Meeting hosted by Office of the Education Council (OEC) wraps up today.
The forum focused on the progress report of International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) 2013 as well as proposals on International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) 2016, English Teaching and Learning Study (ETLS) and Early Childhood Education Study (ECES). Members of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) from 40 countries took part in the meeting.
Country representatives were invited to share their experiences with the dissemination of IEA study results and the impact they would have on national educational reforms.
ICILS focused on students’ computer literacy and other relevant factors, while ICCS looked into how young people are preparing to assume their role as citizens, monitored trends in civic knowledge and challenges they face in the contexts of democracy and civic participation.
ETLS surveyed the acquisition of the English language by non-native speakers, schools and English teachers as well as national samples of students nearing the end of their secondary education.
ECES explores, describes and critically analyses early childhood education and its role in preparing children for learning and social demands of school.
The meeting also discussed trends in mathematics and science study in an effort to improve the quality of education based on practices in Botswana, Germany and Hong Kong. The OEC aims to study these trends in civic education to assess Thai educational development so as to work out improvement strategies.
