The announcement came as ASEAN leaders began meeting in Phnom Penh with their regional counterparts from Japan, South Korea, India and China.
"With Myanmar moving rapidly towards economic reforms, ERIA is working closely with Nayphidaw to draw up a comprehensive economic development plan," a statement said.
"ERIA economic experts are advising the government ways to narrow development gaps in Myanmar," it said.
Based in Jakarta, ERIA is an independent research institute comprising the 10 ASEAN members along with China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2009, ASEAN leaders asked ERIA to work with the Asian Development Bank and the ASEAN secretariat to prepare a master to expand sub-regional initiatives and promote private sector participation.
The institute recently set up a new department focusing on energy security, especially the promotion of energy efficiency in the region.
