Two winners split more than half-billion-dollar US lottery jackpot

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2012

San Francisco - Two lucky Americans shared a jackpot lottery prize of almost 580 million dollars, one of the richest pots in US lottery history, officials said early Thursday.

The names of the two winners were not released after Wednesday night's draw, but an announcement by Powerball, a consortium of state government lottery agencies, said the winning tickets had been bought in the south-western state of Arizona and the Midwestern state of Missouri.

The winning numbers were 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and a Powerball of 6.

The pot was the second-largest lottery prize in US history, according to Powerball, which sells tickets in 42 states. It built up after 16 consecutive drawings without a winner.

The prize grew by 80 million dollars on the last sales day before the drawing as punters from across the country bought tickets at the rate of 130,000 per minute, lottery officials said.//DPA
