Indian musician Ravi Shankar dies at 92

San Francisco - Sitar player and composer Ravi Shankar died Tuesday in southern California aged 92, the musician's family said in a statement posted online.

Shankar had respiratory and heart problems over the past year and underwent heart-valve replacement surgery on Thursday in San Diego, the Ravi Shankar Foundation said.
He helped to popularize Indian classical music in the West and collaborated with artists such as violinist Yehudi Menuhin and guitarist George Harrison of The Beatles.
He was the father of musicians Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar. Shankar served as an unelected member of the upper chamber of India's parliament.//DPA
