Govt says it will help employers keen to rehire migrant workers

Employers wanting to rehire registered migrant workers who have to leave because their nationality was not verified by the December 14 deadline should immediately contact the Employment Department.

“Our provincial offices can coordinate with immigration checkpoints so that the alien workers can get visas to return to work,” Pravit Khiengpol, director-general of the department, said yesterday.
The migrant workers can simply exit Thailand and then come back under the agreement that Thailand has signed with Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, he said.
Some employers had expressed concern about authorities’ vow to repatriate all migrant workers who missed the deadline. More than 300,000 Cambodians, Laotians and Myanmar people have registered but did not meet the deadline, according to authorities.
Pravit said the government had no plan to open registration for new or more migrant workers in the near future, because it had arranged such registrations many times before but employers did not provide full cooperation.
Those workers whose nationality has not yet been verified should report to Immigration or else they will be arrested and face deportation, he said.
