Thailand introduces prisoner release programme to uncrowd jails

Thailand plans to soon release select prisoners from the country's overcrowded jails by fitting them with tracking bracelets to assure they don't go astray, officials said Tuesday.

"I think we will have the system in place very soon," said Kobkiat Kasiwiwat, deputy director general of the Corrections Department.

The programme would target prisoners near the end of serving their sentences or those suffering from chronic or contagious diseases who would be fitted with bracelets containing microchips to allow authorities to monitor their movements 24 hours a day, he said.

Inmates selected for the programme would be prohibited from leaving the country or their homes at night.

The Corrections Department could soon call for bids from the private sector to make the wrist bracelets, department officials said.//DPA
