Police inspector shot dead in Pattani

A police inspector in the deep South province of Pattani succumbed to his injuries yesterday after being ambushed on a road between Yarang and Muang districts.
At about 7.50am, police learned that suspected insurgents had opened fire on Pol Major Neramitr Churote, 44, who was reportedly on intelligence duty, after following him to a T-junction.
Neramitr’s Honda Civic, riddled with bullets, was found at the scene. The front end was also badly damaged, as it had slammed into an electrical pole. Neramitr was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Initial police investigation said four assailants on two motorcycles followed Neramitr’s vehicle for a while and opened fire when he slowed down at the intersection. Neramitr tried to speed away but was hit after several rounds of gunfire and crashed into the pole. The assailants then snatched his gun and sped away.
