Cyclone Mahasen hits Bangladesh coast

Dhaka - Cyclone Mahasen made landfall on the Bangladeshi coast Thursday, officials at the country's meteorological department said.

"The cyclonic storm started crossing the coast near Patuakhali," the office said, referring to a district 150 kilometres south of the capital Dhaka.

It said the storm was likely to reach Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, large coastal cities around 300 and 400 kilometres south-west of the capital, respectively, by noon (0600 GMT).//DPA
