New York - Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire chairman of NewsCorp, has filed for divorce from his wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch, news reports said Thursday.
A News Corp spokesman confirmed that Murdoch, 82, initiated the divorce from the Chinese-born Deng, Bloomberg News and other media reported. Wendi Murdoch, 44, is Murdoch's third wife.
She became known as a fierce defender of her husband when she punched a man who tried to throw a pie at Murdoch when he testified before a British Parliament committee in London in 2011 on alleged phone hacking by one of his newspapers.
The couple married in 1999 and have two daughters. She met Murdoch when she was a junior executive at his Star TV division in Hong Kong, Bloomberg said. She attended California State University and graduated from Yale University's graduate business program before joining News Corp.//DPA
