NACC to take the reins in GPO scandal

The case against two former top executives of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) has been handed to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Dr Vitit Uttavachakul, a former director of the GPO, and former GPO chairman Dr Vichai Chokevivat were accused of bidding collusion in the project contract to develop the GPO’s mass-production medicine factory.
The Cabinet earlier this year approved the termination of Vitit’s employment, after the scandal erupted.
The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) confirmed that it had already forwarded the case to the anti-graft agency. According to the DSI, the GPO suspiciously divided the project into two contracts.
It said there were grounds for believing the move could have been made to prevent the GPO board from involvement in any decision to award the contract.
By arranging two project contracts, the decision-making power rested with Vitit and Vichai.
