Democrats oppose Senate Speaker as chair of House-Senate joint meeting

Democrat MPs and some senators on Tuesday opposed the chairmanship by Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanij at the House-Senate joint meeting for the second reading of the charter amendment bill.

For more than an hour, they demanded House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont chair the session, which would involve key issues like qualifications of MPs and authority of senators.
Some also attacked Nikom and the whips for unfair allocation of debate time.
Pheu Thai MPs and some senators rebutted the opposition. Nikom insisted that he would continue chairing the meeting and vowed to do the job fairly.
