Reading of appellate order delayed by illness

A Court of Appeals order in a battery case in which activists were accused of assaulting power-plant staff during a dispute in Prachuap Khiri Khan will be read out on September 26, after a defendant called in sick during a hearing scheduled for yesterday.

Defendant Wilai Satsue produced a doctor’s note advising rest to the Criminal Court judges, who were to read out the Court of Appeals order that would permit or reject all four defendants’ requests for an extension of a legal limit to their case going to the Supreme Court. Renowned activist Charoen Wat-aksorn was another defendant in the case, which followed a fight between activists and plant workers, until he was shot dead.
Criminal Court sentenced three defendants to suspended prison terms in August 2005, and the Court of Appeals later acquitted one of them.
Charoen was gunned down in June 2004, and those responsible for his murder have not yet been identified.
