Nairobi mall attack death toll rises to 59

Nairobi (dpa) - The number of people killed in an al-Qaeda-linked attack on an upmarket Nairobi shopping mall has risen to 59, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Explosions and shooting could still be heard at the mall nearly 24 hours after militants of the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab entered the mall on Saturday and opened fire on shoppers.
Hostages and gunmen are holed up in the four-storey mall, which is popular with expatriates and locals at weekends. Police freed four people on Sunday, local media reported. Two Kenyan soldiers were also freed, the Interior Ministry said.
Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said more than 1,000 people were rescued from the mall and that police forces were in control of the CCTV room. He added that between 10 and 15 gunmen were believed to be in the mall.
President Uhuru Kenyatta's nephew and his fiance are believed to be among the victims. More than 300 people have been injured.
