Tighter measures to control encroachment

Two state agencies have teamed up to tighten measures to suppress forest encroachment after finding that more than 6,000 rai of mangrove forests have been destroyed over the past decade.

Under a collaboration between Marine and Coastal Resources Department and the Department of Special Investigation, thousands of officials and investigation devices such closedcircuit TVs, satellite images and unmanned aerial vehicles will be deployed to detect and arrest those responsible for encroaching.
Thailand has mangrove forests along a 3,100kilometre coastal area and over the past 10 years, about 6,635 rai of the forests have been destroyed. So far there are 990 mangrove encroachment cases in court, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Vichet Kasemthongsri said.
