Cabinet mulls Andaman rail route

Cabinet mulls Andaman rail route

The Cabinet meeting in Lop Buri today will consider the Tourism Council of Thailand's proposal for construction of a rail route along the Andaman coast to promote tourism in the South.

The Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning Office has been allocated a budget to study the feasibility of a train linking Surat Thani, Phang Nga and Phuket. According to a government source, the TCT will urge the Transport Ministry to consider extending the route to cover other provinces, including Krabi.
The National Economic and Social Development Board says that if it considers this proposal, the ministry must focus on the expected passenger and cargo traffic as well as environmental impacts, as the route would include hilly areas. Public endorsement for the project is equally important.
