Media organisations slam protesters' move

Thai Broadcast Journalists Association, the Thai Journalists Association and the News Broadcasting Council of Thailand issued a statement Sunday, denouncing anti-government protesters' movement against television channels.

This threatens press freedom and goes against the democratic rule. The protesters must stop the action immediately, they said.

Protesters stormed into all six free TV stations on Sunday, demanding all to broadcast their movements and statements and stop airing all news related to the government.

In the joint statement, the media organisations insisted that press freedom must be honoured and all must fight against any threat. In particular, Thai PBS was urged to stop broadcasting, which is an international practice for all broadcasters falling under control.

Yet, they showed compassion to protesters' agitation, saying TV stations have reported little of what has been going on since the mass rally started. While privately-owned stations honour their own interests, government-owned stations are under government control.
