Less repeat offences by drunk drivers

Repeated convictions of drunk drivers have been decreasing in frequency in recent years, thanks to a campaign to arrest and rehabilitate them.

Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, director-general of the Probation Department, said yesterday that repeat offenders have dropped to 2.5 per cent or 1,040 of 42,113 drunk drivers in 2010 to 2.1 per cent in 2011 and 1.2 per cent last year.
In the first 11 months of this year, 50,027 drunk drivers were sentenced to perform community service.
The department will join hands with various organisations to discourage driving under the influence over the long New Year holiday.
