12 pilot projects of Napier-based power plants to be launched

The Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency will kick start 12 pilot projects of generating electricity from Napier grasses in March, according to director-general Pramoul Chanpong.

The department will sign deals with 10 private parties and two state agencies to jointly pilot the projects. The move is also to find out actual cost of the project for calculating the actual feed-in tariff, which is currently determined at Bt4.50 per unit. The construction cost of the Napier-based power plant is estimated at Bt100 million per megawatt. The pilot projects are expected to start supplying power to the system within either late this year or early next year.
