New identity cards, vests for motorcycle taxis

Registered motorcycle-taxi drivers can now sign up for new identification cards and a newly designed vest sporting their ID number.

According to an official announcement yesterday, more than 100,000 motorcycle taxi drivers across the capital, including more than 53,000 new drivers, had officially registered since July. The announcement was jointly made by the King’s Guard, Land Transport Department as well as the Bangkok and Metropolitan Police Bureau.
Asdsathai Rattanadilok na Phuket, director-general of the Land Transport Department, said registered drivers who already have yellow plates have until October 15 to sign up for new identification cards and vest numbers.
Motorcycle taxis in Chatuchak district will have to sign up with the King’s Guard, while drivers in other districts can sign up with the Land Transport Department in their areas.
Registered drivers who want to sign up for a new ID card and new ID number need to bring along their driving licence as well as documents showing that their motorcycle has been registered as a public transport vehicle.
Meanwhile, the Land Transport Department has said that it will provide the newly designed vests with new ID numbers once they are ready. From January 1, all motorcycle-taxi drivers have to wear vests displaying their identification numbers and these vests cannot be passed on or sold to others.
