Hong Kong protests not affecting Thai working there : Labour

Ongoing protest in Hong Kong have had no impact on Thai workers as it is held in financial district, said Employment department's chief Sumet Mahosot said.

There are 28,092 Thais in Hong Kong, he said, 2,848 of them are workers, mostly housemaids. "The protests are taking place in the financial and commercial districts, they do not affect most Thai workers who work in their employers' homes."

However, Sumet said the department informed Thais who were about to leave for Hong Kong of the local situation there so that they could make decisions. In addition, labour officials are warning Thai workers in Hong Kong not to enter protest sites.

Thai Airways International stated that it closed its office near protest venues today for the safety of customers and staff. The closure will continue until Sunday due to next weekend and the National Day of China.

The airline is operating its Bangkok-Hong Kong flights as usual.
