The resident director for the Friedich Ebert Foundation, Marc Saxer, posted on his Facebook page this week that constitutional safeguards must be in place and accepted by all sides.
Social compromises would also be needed, he said, to have a coalition in the centre that would marginalise political extremism. “The middle class in particular must be brought back to democratic flock. This is why the new social contract needs to be based on an inclusive social compromise which caters to the interests of all classes.”
The third factor is inclusive compromise, Saxer said, to propel the Thai economy into escaping the middle income trap. This would mean switching to an inclusive and innovation-led economy.
The last of the four, said Saxer, is to break the dominance of moralist political discourse, which is a major source of reactionary power, and replace it with democratic values.
