PM pushes for Asean to be world's food provider

Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha said on Thursday that he would be seeking Europe's support for Asean to become the world's major food provider. Prayut arrived in Milan on Thursday to attend two-day summit of AsiaEurope Meeting (Asem) that starts today.

He informed a meeting of Thai diplomats posted in European countries that his aim was to promote the role of the region as the main food source of the world and eliminate the problem of possible food shortage in the future.

The summit is his first official participation in the international forum. The summit that is scheduled to start today is held under the theme “Responsible  Partnership for Sustainable Growth and Security”.
The meeting included Team Thailand in Italy as well as businesspeople in town to participate in the AsiaEurope Business Forum.
In his statement, Prayut pointed out that due to the sluggish economy worldwide, Thailand should have a clearer strategy in place and constantly seek to boost trade with foreign partners while concurrently upgrading its logistics system.
He revealed that the government was looking to raise income for Thai workers by offering support to foreigners wishing to invest in Thailand, with a condition that they must employ only Thai nationals and use Thai products.
The premier is set to have discussions with his counterparts from Japan, China and the Czech Republic today before joining others at the Asem Summit, where he will also clarify the overall situation in Thailand as well as progress of the national reform road map.
