He said the board had put deputy director Dr Wanicha Jaisamran in the position of acting GPO director and that a five-member panel had been set up and given three months to find a chief who can unite the agency.
Supakorn said the move was not politically motivated, and the board considered Suvaj – who took the post last September – a good and able person, but his performance as leader was not good enough to effectively support GPO’s missions, objectives and key goals. The termination will go into effect 30 days after Suvaj is notified and he would be given six months salary as compensation, Supakorn added.
The board’s decision on Sunday came shortly after eight health networks led by Apiwat Kwangkaew, president of the Thai Network of People Living with HIV and Aids, submitted a letter to Supakorn calling for serious steps to tackle the shortage of life-saving medication.
The group also called for the setting up of a drug factory in Pathum Thani province and an investigation into Suvaj’s management.
