Pay rise for civil servants to be discussed

The Cabinet is expected tomorrow to consider spending Bt16.8 billion so that public servants can catch up to the private sector in salaries, a source said yesterday.

The Public Sector Development Commission is pushing for an average 4-per-cent pay raise in April.
Junior officials would then enjoy higher salaries than that their peers in companies while middle-level to senior bureaucrats whose pay cheques may hit the ceiling would see their salary cap lifted.
Officials earning less than Bt12,285 would be given a Bt500 increase in allowance to Bt2,000. This means low ranking officials would receive a minimum salary plus an allowance of Bt10,000 in total.
Those making more than Bt10,000 – about 380,000 officials – would receive allowances plus salary of up to Bt13,285 in total.
Officials who do not receive allowances and are below grade 7 would receive a 4-per-cent increase, while middle-level to senior officials would see their salary ceiling adjusted up by up to 10 per cent.
This scheme would cover 1.98 million officials.
The source said the proposal would not add to the country’s financial burden because the funds would be diverted from positions left unfilled after officials retired or resigned, including civil servants, court officials and staff of independent organisations.
