The lower number of ivory traders reflects the government’s attempt to regulate them stringently, said Chainarong Chochai, deputy director-general of the department and chairman of a subcommittee overseeing public relations on the ivory issue.
He said the department had joined forces with the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department and the Royal Thai Police to pressure ivory traders to register with the Commerce Ministry. This action aims to prevent illegal trading and to protect Thailand from international sanctions.
