Steven Gerrard to leave Liverpool, reports say

London (dpa) - Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard is to leave the club at the end of the season, British media reported late Thursday.

Gerrard, who started training at the Liverpool academy when he was nine and made his first-team debut in 1998, will probably move to a club outside England, and is said to be sought after by a number of US clubs.
The 34-year-old Reds captain is expected to make a statement later Friday.
Compliments poured in on social media for a player that local newspaper Liverpool Echo described as a "legend."
Gerrard, also a former England captain, scored 180 goals and played 695 matches for his club. He has captained Liverpool since 2003 and led the club to triumph in the Champions League in 2005.
