Many secondary schools in the Korat area in the Northeast province including 12 others elsewhere that were selected to take part in a special educational programme are planning to each drone operations. However, the new policy, which requires all drone flights to be notified to authorities and permission sought in advance, would hinder the teaching of the subject.
Science teacher Sutthiphan Jansawong of Kham Thale Sor school in Nakhon Ratchasima said he understood the importance of the policy as unregulated operation of civilian drones affect aviation safety and national security.
Other than seeking permission in advance, the ministry also requires that drones travel no higher than 500 feet, carry no camera or be fuelled for the flight to last longer than an hour. Violators face a year in prison and/or a maximum fine of Bt40,000.
