After seven hours, some 20 fire trucks were able to extinguish the fire at the dump and fire fighters brought the blaze under control by 7am.
However, firefighters remained at the scene dousing the waste with water to prevent further sparks from reigniting, as strong winds are blowing through the area, while more workers have being stationed at the site to closely monitor the situation around the clock.
Samut Prakan Deputy Governor Pornchai Sangwonjade said initial inspection revealed that the fire broke out on 4 rai of the dump site’s total land area of 20 rais and the cost of the damage is still being investigated.
A fire broke out at the dump once before, 45 years ago, prompting the province to shut down the site and use only a small area to sort out the different types of recyclable waste.
