Suspect in serial rape case freed after DNA test

Police have released a 35-year-old former worker of Nakhon Pathom Highway District after his DNA test result did not match samples found at the scenes of serial rapes of elderly women in three central provinces, police spokesman Pol Lt-General Prawut Thaw

He said the man – nabbed on Tuesday night at an ice-production factory in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pimai district – reportedly confessed out of “fear and astonishment”.
Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Maj-General Suwat Jangyodsuk yesterday said police apprehended the man for interrogation and his confession might have stemmed from fear or misunderstanding of police questions. Despite interviewing 100 suspects in relation to the serial rapes, Suwat said police still had not arrested anyone for the crimes.
Deputy national police chief Pol General Worapong Chewprecha |insisted that police had not arrested the former highway worker – who |reportedly resembled a sketch of the suspected rapist – and that he did |not confess to the rapes but admitted to stealing power wires on the |street. There were no complaints about such alleged thefts, he said, adding |the man was not upset because he regarded this as “cooperating with the police”.
