MPs and senators will be able to seek impeachment of corrupt officials

Charter drafters have included proposed provisions that allow a quarter of MPs and senators to gather signatures to seek impeachment of corrupt officials, a source said yesterday.

During the review of articles in the constitution draft, charter writers included provisions that give MPs and senators the right to submit a petition to the Parliament president seeking the impeachment of political office holders, ministers, other MPs and senators, the Supreme Court president, Constitution Court judges, the Supreme Administrative Court president, the attorney-general and officials deemed to be corrupt or having committed malfeasance or intentionally breaking the law.
The charter draft has provisions already that allow at least 20,000 eligible voters to seek impeachment of people in the positions listed above.
The charter draft also added a provision that stipulates that salaries of judges be raised at the same time and at the same rate given to bureaucrats to ensure fair and fast salary adjustment. However, the provision said the starting salaries and monthly allowances of civil servants must not be used for judges.
Judges had earlier faced delays in getting salary increases.
The charter writers also included Article 248, which bans political office holders from having conflicts of interest. But they are allowed to appoint close aides, relatives and family members as their secretaries.
