Crane slams down on vehicles at a construction site in don muang

TWO MOTORISTS narrowly escaped death when a crane crushed the roof of a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the bonnet of a Toyota Vios in Bangkok’s Don Muang district yesterday morning.
The accident took place on Kamphaeng Phet 6 Road.
Thanupong Phujcharoen-thanyawat, 39, who was in the Pajero said he survived because he had been reclining in his seat.
“When I rushed to his car, I saw the roof smashed in right above his face,” Tontrakarn Wongpakdee, a temporary employee at the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), said.
The accident took place at the construction site of the Red Line project, which is right next to the road and very close to the Don Muang Train Station.

Lucky to be alive
According to Tontrakarn, Thanupong had parked his car and moved his seat into the reclining position to rest while waiting for a relative.
“If he hadn’t reclined back, the accident would have been really serious,” Tontrakarn said.
Thanupong sustained some injuries to his head and developed a back pain, but was conscious when help arrived.
It took workers a good while to pull off the smashed-in car door and help Thanupong out, before he could be brought to hospital.
Sirikanjana Nantasoon, the owner of the other car, got away unharmed because the crane only hit her vehicle’s bonnet.
The cab of the crane also overturned in the accident and the driver had fled the scene by the time police arrived. The crane is owned by Italian-Thai Development.
“We will try to locate him,” Pol Lieutenant Anan Muangphet from Don Muang Police Station said.
The accident briefly disrupted train services as the crane also hit the tracks and it took relevant officials about two hours to remove it. As of press time, train services had resumed as normal.
