Hawaii's House of Representatives voted 36-13 after the state's Senate voted unanimously to approve the proposal. The HonoluluStar-advertiser reported Governor David Ige has indicated he is open to signing such legislation into law.
The bill allows for up to 16 medical marijuana dispensaries across the state, whose population lives almost entirely on six of the archipelago's eight main islands.
Use of marijuana for medical purposes is legal in 23 of the 50 US states. Four states and the capital district, Washington, have passed laws legalizing some recreational use.
