Plantations in Krabi cleared

The authorities have already felled thousands of rubber and palm trees in plantations allegedly encroaching into a wildlife sanctuary in Krabi province as part of the government's much-publicised campaign to reclaim forestland.

“These trees sat in the Klong Phraya Wildlife Sanctuary,” the sanctuary’s chief Meechai Aiyasoon said yesterday. These plantations sat on top of steep mountains.

More than 250 officials, police and soldiers from various units joined forces in carrying the operation to clear these encroaching plantations.
