The NACC filed the case with the Supreme court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions last month, accusing Surapong, 58, of committing malfeasance in violation of Section 157 of the Criminal Code while serving as finance minister in the People Power Party-led government of former prime minister Samak Sundaravej.
After receiving a petition from the Office of the Ombudsman, the anti-graft agency conducted a probe and concluded that Surapong had illegally appointed the chairman and a member of the board at the Bank of Thailand.
The NACC claimed some members of the selection committee did not meet the qualifications specified in the Bank of Thailand Act (1942) and Article 28/1 of the fourth amendment to the Bank of Thailand Act (2008). Hence, the NACC found there were grounds to support the alleged accusation.
