Police raid gambling den in Sukhumvit penthouse

POLICE raided a gambling den in Bangkok's Watthana district early yesterday and rounded up 16 punters, including two Singaporeans.

Following a tip-off about gambling in a condominium building’s penthouse on Sukhumvit Soi 39, police launched a search at 3am and rounded up 11 males and five females and seized two poker table sets, one mahjong card table set, 2,465 gambling chips, 37 sets of cards and some account books. None of the suspects admitted to owning the gambling den, which has reportedly been open since July 4.
Police probe initially found the penthouse was rented by a South Korean national for Bt100,000 a month. The gambling operation reportedly had been rotated from one condominium to another and required punters – most of who were businesspeople – to apply for a membership and transfer money to the den before playing, police said. The den’s money flow was allegedly about Bt1 million a day.
