Drafters extend NLA deadline for six laws

The constitution drafters have revised the draft charter to allow more time for the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) to complete its deliberation of six important draft organic laws.

Yesterday’s meeting of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), chaired by its head Bowornsak Uwanno, resolved to extend the deadline to 90 days, from 60 days previously. The deadline is stated in the transitional chapter of the draft charter.
The decision came after the drafters had consulted with NLA members, who expressed concern that 60 days was insufficient for them to complete the task.
The organic laws, resulting from provisions in the draft constitution, involve legislation on election of MPs and acquisition of senators, on political parties, and on the Election Commission, as well as legislation on national reform, on reconciliation, on the National Strategy Committee.
