Hundreds of 'street-racers' arrested on way to 'charity event'

A TOTAL OF 361 "street-racers" were rounded up yesterday morning and their 258 motorcycles seized on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road in Chatuchak district while they were participating in a "charity and tourism trip" to Nakhon Nayok.

 
Pol Lt General Prawut Thavornsiri, National Police spokesman, said the large group which had reportedly started gathering at 5am  was monopolising the outer express lane with no regard to safety. 
He said they would be charged with reckless driving of motorcycles and causing a public disturbance, crimes that are punishable by up to three months in prison and/or Bt2,000Bt10,000 fine. He said their illegallymodified vehicles would also be impounded. 
As for the 59 members under 18, their parents would be summoned and given an official warning about their behaviour.
Their information would be filed on record so they would be subject to legal action if they repeat the violations.
