PM to name new police chief on Friday

THE new police chief should be named on Friday, national police chief Pol General Somyot Poompunmuang said yesterday, adding that the final decision lay in the hands of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

He said that he would accept Prayut’s choice like a “well-disciplined policeman”, but would also be happy to provide suggestions and advise the PM about each candidate.
“I have no idea who the premier will choose, but I think the answer will be known by August 14, because the name will be proposed to the meeting,” he said.
There are five candidates for the job as per their seniority – Pol General Aek Angsananont, Pol General Pongsapat Pongcharoen, Pol General Wuthi Liptapanlop, Pol General Chalermkiat Srivorakan and Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda.
All the candidates hold the position of deputy national police chief and Somyot has tasked them with submitting a four-page letter expressing their vision. While Aek and Pongsapat only have one year before they retire, Wuthi will be in service until 2017, Chalermkiat until 2019 and Chakthip until 2020.
