Detained Myanmar activist to begin hunger strike

Aung Hmaing Hsan of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions will go on hunger strike starting October 23 after the government failed to release detained political prisoners last week.

The detained students and activists of the Democracy Education Boycott Column appeared at the Thayawady court in Bago Region on October 20 for their 22nd court hearing.

However, hearing was not held because the case is still being considered by the Bago Region High Court. The next court hearing will be on October 27.
While in court, the detained students and activists demanded the release of political prisoners.

On September 30, Aung Hmaing Hsan of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (Ba-Ka-Tha) demanded the release of detained political prisoners by October 15. However, the government did not fulfil the demand. Aung Hmaing Hsan has vowed to begin a hunger strike on October 23.

“Following the beginning of my hunger strike, I may have to appear in a court. And if people request to meet me, I may meet with them. As for my desire, I want to go on a hunger strike without appearing in court until the [government] agrees to my request,” said Aung Hmaing Hsan.

“The hunger strike of Aung Hmaing Hsan does not represent the Ba-Ka-Tha; it is his own initiative. As for Ba-Ka-Tha students, they can choose whether they want to participate in the hunger strike,” said Min Thwe Thit from the All Burma Federation of Student Unions.
