Meechai more amenable to selected senators idea

THE head constitution drafter has softened his stance in response to the junta’s suggestion that the draft charter should be revised to allow selected senators during the five-year transition following the next general election.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his deputy Prawit Wongsuwan are among the key figures from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) who have suggested the measure.
Meechai Ruchupan, chairman of the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC), said Friday the drafters would consider whether proposed special mechanisms should be included in the new charter.
“In the original transitory clauses, there are ordinary mechanisms available,” he said. “But if special mechanisms are needed, we have to consider the reasons. We will mainly adhere to the national interests.”
