Magnitude-6.2 quake hits southern Japanese islands, no tsunami threat

Tokyo - A magnitude-6.2 earthquake rattled southern Japanese islands on Tuesday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property from the quake, which struck far underground at a depth of 220 kilometres. The seismic centre of the quake at 2:24 pm (0524 GMT) was off Ishigaki island, about 2,000 kilometres south-west of Tokyo, the agency said.
In April, two major quakes rocked Kumamoto on the southern island of Kyushu, killing 49 people.
The twin quakes were the largest since the earthquake and ensuing tsunami in north-eastern Japan in March 2011, which left about 18,500people dead and caused the country's worst-ever nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
