Myanmar teen charged over Yangon bomb hoax

YANGON - A teenager has been charged with Section 66(d) of the Telecommunications Law for sending his friends an SMS saying that Junction Square and Myanmar Plaza in Yangon would be blown up.

The 17-year-old from Khayaybin in Mingaladon Township texted three friends saying: "We've got 80 AK47s and 20 C4 bombs ready. Three bombs are for the car park of Junction Square at 2pm on July 10 and four for Myanmar Plaza at 2.10pm. If they are successful, come to fetch money. Yakuzi."
He accidentally texted it to a woman in Botataung Township, who contacted the police.
"They were playing games. The last message went to the wrong number. We filed a lawsuit for disturbing the public although they were only having fun," said Brigadier-General Win Naing from Yangon Region police.
The boy confessed but said it was a joke and the two other friends who received the message said they knew it was just for fun, Win Naing said.
