True to be asked to pay customer

THE NATIONAL Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commis-sion will ask True Corporation to compensate a customer who lost nearly Bt1 million from his bank account due to a mix-up by the cellular operator.

“I will do my best to protect cellphone users,” Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the NBTC, said yesterday ahead of his discussion with True representatives today.
Shop-owner Phansutee Meeleukij had found out on July 31 that soon after his cellphone service was cut off, someone used Internet banking to withdraw nearly Bt1 million from his Kasikornbank account.
An investigation revealed that the person had modified the copy of Phansutee’s ID card to get another SIM card from a True branch to receive the one-time password needed for the online transaction.
A source said Bt986,700 was transferred to a bank account that had been opened in Ratchaburi.
“Three withdrawals then took place from ATMs at a shopping complex in the suburbs of Bangkok.
“The True branch that issued the SIM card to the wrong man has also operated at this place,” the source said. Although Phansutee eventually received all of his money back from Kasikornbank, he suffered from lost business because his shop had to be closed for three weeks due to the theft.
