Bangkok police prepare traffic jams plan as schools reopen

Metropolitan Police met Tuesday to lay down strategy for dealing with traffic congestion in the vicinity of Bangkok schools during the opening of the second semester around the end of this month.

Pol Maj-General Jirapat Phumjit, acting deputy city police chief, presided over the meeting which heard that traffic jams due to schoolchildren would add to the city's already high road volumes caused by Royal ceremonial events and ongoing infrastructure projects.
Jirapat instructed traffic police to coordinate with schools in their jurisdictions while watching for any traffic issues or accidents so that they can be resolved quickly.
Traffic police must be in position at 5am and 3pm for the morning and evening rush hours, with city officials and volunteers backing them up on secondary roads, he said.
Jirpitat added that police would arrest traffic law violators and tow away their vehicles.
