Some roads to re-open around Grand Palace and Sanam Luang: police

TRAFFIC Police will cancel the closure of 27 roads around the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang – although eight main roads will remain shut – from Saturday, deputy national police spokesman Maj General Piyapan Pingmuang said Friday.

The closure of 27 roads was done every weekend since mid-October to accommodate mourners going to pay respects to HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Piyapan said the move was lifted as everything had fallen into place, and people could get updates from the traffic division (www.trafficpolice.go.th or the 1197 hotline).
But more police would be deployed to accommodate people, he said with officers from the Immigration Police manning some checkpoints at Sanam Luang for national security reasons.
Deputy national police spokesman Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen said some 180,000 tourists had visiting the Temple of the Emerald Buddha since November 1.
Police had received 200 complaints about missing children but all had been found and returned their parents or guardians, he said. Consumer Protection Division officers would also continue to take action against people selling over-priced souvenirs related to the late King.
