Malaysia ambassador summoned amid Rakhine claims

Kyaw Tin, deputy minister for foreign affairs, has summoned the Malaysian ambassador Haniff Bin Abd Rahman to express his dismay at Prime Minister Najib Razak’s accusations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Najib led a recent public rally in Kula Lumpur and made strong remarks against the government of the fellow Asean member.

The deputy minister rejected the accusations of “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide”. His irresponsible remarks could worsen the already deepening polarisation between the two communities and incite violent extremism, the statement said.

The ambassador was informed of Myanmar’s desire to maintain friendly relations with Asean family members and need not be "misled by the disinformation campaigns waged by certain groups with ulterior motives against Myanmar". The deputy minister stressed the importance of upholding the Asean spirit of friendship and cooperation as well as the principle resolution of disputes between member states through dialogue, consultation and negotiation, according to the statement.

The ambassador was also informed of the "strenuous efforts" taken by the government to resolve the issues in Rakhine State, including the establishment of the advisory commission led by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and a national-level investigation commission. Kyaw Tin called for assistance from the international community in efforts to maintain peace, stability and security and to make progress in building better relations between the two communities, instead of aggravating the situation.

The deputy minister reportedly told the ambassador that any action that could "radicalise extremist movements that would endanger not only the Asean unity but also regional peace and stability". Myanmar would continue to strive to achieve harmony, peace and prosperity in Asean and beyond, the statement added.
