Wat Ratchabophit door fire caused by welding sparks: police

Police said the fire that damaged a 150-year-old teak door at Vihara in Wat Ratchabophit on Thursday stemmed from an accident caused by welding sparks from chapel renovation work.

Following an inspection, Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakparn, commander of the special police task force, said police were told the Vihara had been under renovation for some time and sparks from the metal work was the likely cause. However, Surachet assigned extra patrols at the temple as an added security measure.
The temple abbot, Somdet Phra Maha Muneewong, has been appointed the 20th Supreme Patriarch. His investiture ceremony will be held at the Emerald Buddha Temple on Sunday.
