Fatal accident in Chiang Rai as cement-mixer loses control

A cement-mixer truck ran across a safety island while swerving and banged into an oncoming van in Chiang Rai province yesterday, killing nine people and injuring four others.
The fatal accident took place in Chiang Rai’s Muang district Wednesday afternoon.
Killed at the scene were truck driver Kwangmuang Jamit, 55, and eight passengers in the van. Also involved in the accident were a pickup and a car that could not apply their brakes in time once the van was hit.
All injured victims were rushed to hospitals nearby.
Initial investigation revealed that Kwanmuang lost control of the truck as he was trying to overtake a motorbike, and went over the traffic island to hit the van.
The van was travelling from Chiang Rai’s Mae Chan district to Muang district.
