LONDON - A police officer was stabbed and the alleged assailant shot by armed police following an incident Wednesday at the British Houses of Parliament, a government minister said.

David Lidington, the leader of parliament's lower House of Commons who is responsible for arranging government business, told MPs: "It seems that a police officer has been stabbed, that the alleged assailant was shot by armed police."

Downing Street said Prime Minister Theresa May was safe.
